Next-Gen Robots Are Consummate Team Players

Actually, as artificial intelligence (AI) more and more forces autonomous such things as robots, no. 1 objective of companies would be to connect business silos for business value. For this reason I designed a beeline for the following-generation robotics display in the recent Azure NOW and ASUG Annual Conference.

Groundbreaking Efficiencies and Savings

To be certain, robots already toil away in lots of industries. However the three types of SAP co-innovation I saw broke new ground in human-computer interaction, impacting daily and proper business ways to dramatically alter the worker and customer experience.

Unlike bigger, industrialized early ancestors, this latest robot species was created with built-in connectivity to systems in the warehouse to store. Less costly than the earlier versions, they’re also packed with colored lights, sensors and cameras. Within the warehouse, these robots can pick the best products and cargo them on other transport robots for delivery to some shipping pier. Colored lights indicate their route so people could work alongside them securely.

“Previously, robots utilized in large manufacturing facilities were so effective they might have injured humans when they got too close,” stated David Owen, director from the Retail Advisory Group at SAP. “This newest generation of robots have sensors in it to allow them to respond to humans.”

He added that prices for warehouse robots - including installation and operation - have considerably decreased: “Some in our customers report 30 % savings for every item selected.”

Robot Patrols Change Supermarket Experience

The robot story only improved as Owen walked me with the next example inside a supermarket, which used the SAP Logistics Control Tower solution. Picture a robotic moving side-by-affiliate with customers through supermarket aisles. Its 2D and 3D cameras and sensors could count inventory, place misplaced or mislabeled products, conduct cost checks, and identify what products needed replenishment. Connectivity using the robots within the warehouse, associated with SAP Extended Warehouse Management, might trigger alerts to choose and ship substitute products for your store.

When I viewed the display screen, up sprang a real picture of the shelf instantly, showing the precise location within the store, product names and sizes, and also the status from the alert. Hazards like damaged eggs or perhaps a spilled bottle of ketchup might be quickly cleared up since the robot sent alerts to some manager’s dashboard.

“The manager often see a summary of alerts and recommended employees to fix the issue,” stated Owen. “This evidence of concept is integrated with SAP SuccessFactors software therefore it demonstrated information regarding individuals employees.”

Connected Data for Intelligent Insights

The dashboard incorporated sales analytics by individual stores. Incorporated within the display were sales actuals versus predictive trends analyses. All this information was integrated with customer experience data, mapping satisfaction levels to factors such as product availability, store cleanliness, and also the on-site team.

“Companies can hang their very own extra sensors around the robot, attaching RFID or bar code scanners to increase the abilities according to their own business demands,” stated Owen. “For example, you could include temperature indicators to exhibit the neighborhood temperature and check out trending items that seriously purchase when certain weather occasions happen.”

If robots might help retailers have cleaner stores stocked with the proper products, it’s certain a lot more companies released the welcome pad with this next-gen of machines.

SAP in Vietnam: Not Just the Next Tiger, But a Unique Dragon

SAP’s business in Vietnam keeps growing, spurred by not only the country’s economic miracle. SAP Vietnam Md Josephin Galla shares the strategies of her sales team’s success

Go for a walk with the hubbub within the roads of Hanoi, and also you see what i mean: This can be a vibrant, high-energy place, where everything appears to stay in motion. Vietnam’s capital has roughly 8 million occupants also it feels as though they’re full-scale with an endless number of scooters, blaring their horns. Contradictions mesh within the hubbub from the city. Small local shops nestle alongside designer stores, women prepare street food while checking their smartphones, and-rise structures with trendy rooftop bars blend with French colonial architecture within the Old Quarter.

There is a similar buzz at SAP Vietnam. Galla and her salesforce, located in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, achieved outstanding successes this past year.

“We’re on the growth trajectory, particularly with regards to our cloud business,” states Galla, who required control of the subsidiary at the outset of 2018.

Vietnam Looking for Global Expansion

In 1975, Vietnam was among the world’s poorest nations. However the Doi Moi reforms from the mid-1980s ushered in economic and political renewal, and Vietnam now views itself a socialist market economy.

Based on the World Bank, this key player within the East Asian economic miracle has witnessed its gdp grow year-on-year by between six and 7 percent since 2015. Achieving 7.08 percent GDP development in 2018, it also outperformed its mighty neighbor China. The Economist Intelligence Unit predicts that Vietnam are experiencing stable growth and then be among the quickest-growing economies in the area between 2019 and 2023.

The domestic economy is hungry for additional, based on Cuong Truong, an SAP account executive in Vietnam, who adds, “Vietnamese companies wish to go global, plus they need technology to compete on the planet market. The federal government has recognized that personal enterprise may be the core engine from the economy and it is putting policies in position to assist it compete around the global stage. It’s an incredible marketplace for SAP to deal with.”

Vietnamese condition-owned companies have a tendency to favor on-premise systems, partially due to stricter cybersecurity legislation that arrived to effect captured. Nonetheless, SAP’s cloud business in Vietnam is soaring, mainly in the private sector. “There’s a significant openness for brand new technologies here,” states Galla. “The marketplace is not saturated, and we’re virtually inside a grassroots situation since there aren’t a lot of legacy systems to battle.”

70 percent from the roughly 450 SAP customers in Vietnam are midsize companies, but SAP also serves large enterprises in key, high-value industries for example gas and oil, utilities, and telecommunications. Thomas Le, a business value engineer at SAP, explains: “The government is pushing digital transformation and it is dedicated to Industry 4., so its investments in technology increases.”

But SAP’s success within the Vietnamese market isn't just lower towards the country’s economic growth.

Customers Expect Greater Than Software

“Vietnamese business culture is dependant on fundamental trust you need to earn,” states Galla. “When we discuss success, we’re not only talking about our very own figures.”

SAP customer TH Group comprises 12 companies and employs greater than 12,000 individuals Vietnam and beyond. TH true MILK, a part of TH Group and something of Vietnam’s largest milk producers, implemented SAP SuccessFactors solutions for human sources in 2018. With the aid of SAP software, the organization has had the ability to cut worker turnover in two in just 3 years. Within the fight for talent within the Vietnamese market, retaining the very best employees is vital for TH true MILK.

The organization presently has additional time to commit to the proper growth and development of its employees, states Galla. “And it didn’t happen because i was just selling SAP SuccessFactors software. We actually wanted the organization to become effective, and each single person in we was focused on that aim.”

The team’s attempts are not purely non selfish, concedes Galla, however a true and honest relationship unlocks the doorway to some more informal level where you're able to discuss more sensitive regions of the company.

“Vietnam is really a small community,” concurs Mai Nguyen, mind of Partner Business for SAP in Vietnam. “You need to be seen as an reliable partner making your implementation project successful, otherwise the trust is finished.”

SAP Chief executive officer Visit Puts Vietnam into the spotlight

On his first official trip to Vietnam in September, Bill McDermott, Chief executive officer of SAP SE, met Pm Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who reiterated his government’s aim of creating a digital economy and smart industry.

McDermott’s visit was an essential signal towards the market in Vietnam, states SAP sales director Viet Nguyen. Consequently, he explains, C-level executives at Vietnamese companies are in possession of more confidence within the formerly less well-known SAP brand.

Tiger and Dragon: The way the Story Continues

“I’m fascinated with our customers’ readiness to maneuver fast, to innovate, to create mistakes, and also to improve,” states Galla. Along with her team, she's created a growth plan according to three support beams: empower the SME segment, enable intelligent enterprises in Vietnam, and become the key cloud company in Vietnam. The plan’s slogan is “Powering Digital Vietnam.”

SAP Awarded for Running Germany’s Best Digital Innovation Unit

Although the German economy is within a powerful position they are driving global digitalization, several reports reveal that the nation must do more to harness the potential for emerging technologies. Leading companies have understood the signals and set their very own mechanisms in position to provide organic innovation. Today, German corporations established greater than 230 digital innovation units, that is sufficient cause for esteemed business journal CAPITAL and strategy and management consultancy Infront to place these to the acidity make sure assess their impact.

Around 50 corporate innovation units took part in the excellent two-level study across the phases Innovation Discovery, Development, and Scaling. As the latter studies demonstrated that lots of innovation centers have advanced processes and methodologies in position, they lack evidence for sustainable effect on mom company. Hence, 2010 survey centered on tangible results - a scope that permitted the SAP Innovation Center Network to shine. The jury elected SAP Innovation Center Network because the champion within the category “Innovation Discovery.”

Torsten Zube, mind of SAP Innovation Center Network, couldn't hide this excitement: “I’m particularly thrilled relating to this award after i consider the great competition. Three Steps for IT Leaders

For This leaders, however, this could appear overwhelming. In the end, CIOs have built their technology stack over decades. It might be inflexible and outdated. Pulling it apart and reassembling the IT landscape inside a more efficient way seems like a tall order.

Where should technology leaders begin?

Begin with the simple Efforts

Initially when i first became a member of Qualtrics 3 years ago, we'd a legacy monolith which was suitable for time our organization began. It grew to become obvious when we would have liked to please our customers and lower our operational complexity, we wanted to interrupt apart the monolith.

Prior to starting, CIOs must lay the research. Consider building new abilities utilizing a services orientation. Consider how you can reduce and sometimes get rid of the time that it takes engineers to get sources they are able to deploy. Evaluate the services lifecycle and see how services might evolve individually.

It’s best to start with something easy. We started by splitting aspects of the monolith which were relatively decoupled in the application layer. That helped us prove we're able to decouple, operate services, and set up the required operational models and business components.

Next, search for areas from the business experiencing scale and growth. I was experiencing triple-digit growth on the directory product as well as in the amount of survey responses being generated. Which was a vital signal these areas were ripe for splitting from the system monolith.

Another task is to pay attention to features. Consider featuring produce the most demands from customers. Where is easily the most entropy and alter within the monolith? Which areas of the monolith are altering most?

At Qualtrics, we'd library abilities that continued to be unchanged for ten years. Interest in these functions was predictably low, but we had quickly rising interest in analytics abilities. Customers were asking the way they can use our solutions for dashboards, reports, and visualization. They wanted to understand about analytics abilities they might layer on the top. It had been imperative for all of us to maneuver individuals abilities from the monolith as rapidly as you possibly can.

Anticipate Scale

After assessing these preliminary concerns, it’s vital that you consider the potential for the company. As enterprises vary from industrial automation to digital enablement, the magnitude of change is huge. Effective companies won’t see straight line change - it will likely be exponential.

Because of this, every leader should consider exactly what the infrastructure need to look like at 10 occasions the size. It can be hard to pinpoint what must be enhanced for 25 or 30 % increases in scale. But considering systems growing by 10 occasions can make the required changes obvious.

Let’s be sensible. Not all aspects of your platform or architecture is going to be susceptible to 10-fold growth. But, there are specific inputs that tell your choices and have an effect on the way your architecture must scale. For instance, a business having a proper initiative they are driving mass utilization of mobile technology might develop a new mobile-first infrastructure. That firm might find its mobile infrastructure scale out in a different factor than its Web or legacy infrastructure.

For Qualtrics, our proper imperative was to really make it simpler to collect and produce operational data (O-data) and experience data (X-data) into our platform. This way, we're able to combine and evaluate data with techniques which help customers affect change. When we met individuals goals, the 2 subsystems in our platform would effortlessly grow by 10 occasions over the following 2 yrs.

We focused our “10 times” question on individuals areas: Let's say we had survey taking increase by 10 occasions? Or IT directory services? Let's say we'd a ten-occasions rise in the consume of X-data in to the system? We extracted individuals three abilities in the monolith and built these questions services fashion, so that they could scale inside a straight line manner.

Modularization might help companies move toward developing a perfect experience - for purchasers, employees, and partners.

Pursue Innovation

For businesses which have monolithic IT infrastructures, not everything can alter at the same time. Yet, there are several prerequisites CIOs may take to produce a foundation for innovation.

Concentrate on agile operating models as well as an agile infrastructure.

Consider how engineers get sources to complete their jobs. Exactly what do they should be in a position to deploy code within minutes instead of days? Just how can they be asked to consider a services orientation? How can they leverage platform-as-a-service choices?

Deploy agile technology. Which systems will drive continuous delivery?

Just how can something mesh or service orchestration help? What's the easiest method to empower teams to find the framework which makes sense for that problems they're solving?

Create a consistent, agile methodology and approach.

An agile method of development and research (R&D) needs a transition from the project-based business structure to some functional business structure. Companies should create lengthy-resided, small teams which are empowered to rapidly iterate on system components they “own.” Rapid iterations allow teams to fail rapidly and discover from experience.

Forced to Flee, Some Refugees Are Rebooting Their Lives as Software Engineers

Ahmad Alzubi is probably the 6.3 million refugees who've fled Syria. Like a youthful student in 2015, he'd planned to complete his final year of highschool and attend college to review information technology. But his plans for any stable, self-sufficient future fell apart once the war showed up in the hometown of Dara’a, Syria. He and the father were arrested and tortured, with simply Ahmad surviving.

His family made the tough decision to temporarily relocate to some refugee facility, first in Za’atari and then in Irbid, Jordan. Going to finish his education, Ahmad transported his books with him over the border into Jordan. “I still recall the bad time I'd around the border as i am transporting my books,” he states. “I was holding my books since i was planning to return for that exam to carry on my education.”

Because the chief provider for his 11-member family, Ahmad required employment like a construction worker for all of usDollar300 per month, however the work was exhausting and drained him of one's for his studies. Getting not finished his studies in Syria, he was not able to locate placement from our education system.

From Constuction Worker to Sofware Engineer in Four Several weeks

Finally, in 2018, Ahmad was recognized right into a software engineering bootcamp managed by ReBootKamp (RBK), a job accelerator that partners with SAP through its Digital Skills for Today (DSFT) initiative to digitally empower youth, refugees, and minority populations around conflict zones. For Ahmad, working out marked a level in the existence. Lucrative earns US$3,500 monthly being employed as a complete stack software engineer for any U.S.-based insurance provider. Where before he was living hands to mouth, he is now support a significantly greater quality lifestyle for his family.

In the non-working hrs, he tutors his siblings also to be eligible for a RBK’s training course. Ahmad writes of his encounters within the RBK bootcamp, “I’m a brand new Ahmad with bigger dreams, bigger hopes, and larger vision. I will tell you that here' found myself and i'm now a much better individual.”

Coding for any Better Future

Maisaa Alkhedr is yet another Syrian refugee who, much like Ahmad, found gainful employment like a software engineer after graduating from the bootcamp managed by RBK. Made to flee Syria together with her parents and five siblings, Maisaa traveled from Homs to Palmyra and onto Damascus under constant terror from bombings. In 2014, she and her family finally moved in Jordan, where she could finish her final year of college. However, she was not able to locate a job.

In an RBK bootcamp, Maisaa found an inviting place where she rapidly grew to become everyone’s favorite pairing partner. She now works in Jordan for any Canadian-based healthcare IT company. In her own new atmosphere, Maisaa has had the ability to exercise her intellectual gifts and possibility to rebuild her existence with dignity. She's now inside a stronger position to maintain her family and integrate into her new atmosphere having a positive perspective for future years.

Some bootcamp graduates favor an entrepreneurial track in to the employment market to best leverage their additional skills, professional contacts, and creativeness by getting innovative services and products to the hungry market. Yusuf, initially from Syria, is one kind of a brand new variety of entrepreneurs in the area.

Yusuf finished a coding bootcamp managed by Re:Coded, a nonprofit organization that partners with SAP with the DSFT initiative. Within the bootcamp, he learned technical and business skills for mobile development. Following graduation, Yusuf founded Torever, a startup using the mission of creating travel simpler and much more enjoyable with the Torever mobile application. Lucrative works together other bootcamp graduates in the industry.

“Re:Coded was a lot more than a bootcamp,” states Yusuf. “I learned much more about working together, presentation skills, and entrepreneurship than I’ve ever endured before. I could make new friends, grow my network, and, most significantly, Personally i think well informed about myself.”

World Refugee Day

The tales of Ahmad, Maisaa, and Yusuf highlight the plight of refugees about this World Refugee Day, observed on June 20 to commemorate the force, courage, and perseverance of individuals made to flee their houses because of conflict or persecution. You will find 68.5 million intentionally displaced people worldwide. Of individuals, 25.4 million are called refugees, 1 / 2 of whom they are under age 18, based on UNHCR, the Un (United nations) Refugee Agency. The company reports that almost all refugees originate from Afghanistan, Syria, and South Sudan.

Among the disruption and chaos of displacement, these folks feel the trauma and uncertainty which comes from getting their lives abruptly tossed into turmoil, human bonds damaged, and plans for future years derailed. Made to resettle to temporary camps, refugees must rapidly navigate a brand new atmosphere to supply fundamental requirements for his or her families.

Solving Youth Employment Crisis with ICT Readiness

By fostering digital literacy and expertise leading to job placement, DSFT seeks to spread out a way for youthful people, including refugees, to rebuild their identities and secure a much better future inside a region rife with conflict and war. There are other than 700 recently skilled IT professionals like Ahmad, Maisaa, and Yusuf, who've found gainful employment in Jordan, Poultry, and Iraq due to DSFT.

Introduced in the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 as Refugee Code Week, the initiative aims to shape generation x of technology experts through job relevant training and employment possibilities. DSFT is implemented together with organizations like UNHCR, Injaz Al Arab, RBK, and Re:Coded. It's a cause of the main one Million Arab Coders initiative. The broader initiative, that also includes digital skills for college children, features coding to greater than 36,777 youthful refugees and nationals across 10 countries in the centre-East North Africa (MENA) region.

While supplying digital skills and practicing refugees and youths, DSFT also strives to coach local nationals to satisfy the present market interest in skilled professionals in information and communications technology (ICT), the quickest growing sector from the economy. Economists forecast that a million ICT jobs will be included to the economy within the MENA region within the next 5 years. However, the present reality within the employment market is economically unsustainable. In Jordan alone, you will find 30,000 unemployed ICT professionals, despite there being 20,000 vacant tech job postings inside a 60-mile radius from the capital of Amman.

“Bringing about additional skills and knowledge of conflict-impacted areas is important towards the development and renovation of individuals regions,” states Batoul Husseini, director of Digital Government and company Social Responsibility and global lead for DSFT at SAP MENA. “We try to unveil the numerous potential coding heroes that just don't have the chance to enhance their lives and make their very own future. Our hands-on learning material and workout sessions allow a fast insertion within the workforce, thus shaping a whole generation of tech-savvy professionals.”

Bootcamps to Reboot Lives

Candidates undergo a screening process before attending among the software engineering bootcamps organized by RBK and Re:Coded. The bootcamps run 16 to 18 days and equip participants with soft and hard skills to get entry-level engineers.

An average cohort comprises 50 % local nationals and 50 % refugees, internally displaced people, or asylum seekers, with ages varying from 16 to 55. Within the bootcamps, local nationals are matched having a refugee or asylum seeker his or her work partner. This pairing concept facilitates integration into the local people for refugees and asylum seekers. Each cohort is gender-balanced to ensure that participation is split evenly among women and men. In 2018, female participation within the bootcamps was 56 percent.

“Our customers are very clear about the business outcomes they expect to achieve when migrating to the cloud — and that includes operational excellence and innovation,” said Jennifer Morgan, president of Cloud Business Group and member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. “Working together with the hyperscalers and global strategic service partners, we’re in a unique position to shape our customers’ journeys to becoming intelligent enterprises.”

Planned customer benefits include shorter negotiations, streamlined teaming and faster, risk-managed implementations.
“Embrace” aims to include the following components:

  • Solution: A set of foundational services running on SAP Cloud Platform to enable the integration, orchestration and extension of SAP systems and third-party applications running in the cloud or on premise
  • Reference architecture: A jointly developed technical blueprint that incorporates the required SAP and hyperscaler components to run the customer’s applications
  • Market-approved journeys: A jointly created and market-approved road map to SAP S/4HANA by industry – created with hyperscalers and global strategic service partners
  • New SAP MaxAttention services and SAP ActiveAttention services: A newly launched set of services designed to support customers running a cloud or hybrid infrastructure on a hyperscaler

Scotland’s Topolytics Wins Circular Economy 2030 Contest

SAP and Google Cloud today announced that Michael Groves, CEO and founder of Topolytics, won the Circular Economy 2030 contest, an award that fosters social entrepreneurship for a sustainable future.

SAP and Google Cloud launched the contest at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year, prompted by the urgent need to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which calls for responsible production and consumption.

Both companies will harness the power of their technologies to challenge social entrepreneurs globally to use their passion to solve world problems. More than 250 participants from over 50 countries in six continents submitted applications. Five finalists were chosen, and their ideas ranged from better managing food waste to combat hunger to tracing batteries for future use, recycling fabric remnants and sustaining rural farms in Kenya.

The winner, Topolytics, a data and analytics company, offers a metadatabase of industrial and commercial waste. It uses mapping, sensors and analytics to create a database that maps the generation, movement and fate of waste. The award includes US$100,000 in funding, a Google Cloud for Startups: Surge Package (includes US$100,000 in Google Cloud credits), SAP product access, 1:1 mentorship and Google Cloud for Startups Bootcamp.

“I’m absolutely delighted that Topolytics has won SAP and Google Cloud’s CE2030 Challenge,” said Michael Groves, CEO of Topolytics. “Our ambition and use of leading-edge technology are a natural fit for these titans of the tech world.”

How to Better Meet Your Customer’s Needs

Solving Your Problems Faster In House

“Solve them in house by making [your] own applications and deploy them more quickly,” SAP’s Roger Roney said during a demonstration at NRF 2019. “I have added capability because I’m using SAP Cloud Platform, to not just capture and deliver information but to do something as well.”

In Roney’s example, an internal app for in-store associates uses image recognition technology to identify products on the shelf and the associate can view relevant information, change the price, or order more. For external/customer use, an in-house app could rely on SAP Leonardo and other technology to create a virtual shopping list, which renders the items on a virtual store shelf, showing the current price of each item, and the total cost of the entire order.

“Our customers can create their own innovations [and] fill their own gaps without having to come to a vendor like SAP,” Roney said. “They can do it on their own.”

Keeping up with How the Joneses Shop

People will always eat, [but] the way people eat will always change,” Kroger’s McMullen said. As a result, organizations must use data to constantly evaluate how they can better help their customers, whether they’re shopping online, in stores, or both, according to McMullen.

“Customers want anything they want, anytime they want, anywhere they want,” McMullen said. So organizations “really have to understand: Where is it you’re trying to go? What are the things that you’re better off doing on your own? And what are the things you need to partner with others?”

Creating your own apps is something you might be better off doing on your own, but it could require you to disrupt someone unexpected.

Winning at Your Own Game

“You have to be willing to disrupt yourselves,” Target Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell said onstage at NRF 2019. “You have to be willing to reinvest: in stores, in digital, in technology, in fulfillment, and in your teams.”

Target was at a crossroads a few years ago, according to Cornell. It could try to beat the likes of Amazon head on; that would have required building a gargantuan distribution network at break-neck speed. Instead, Target decided to win at its own game.

“We already had a coast-to-coast network — more than 1,800 potential distribution points — [but] we’d only thought about them as stores,” Cornell said. “Today we consider our stores our single biggest competitive advantage; they function as service centers, fulfillment hubs, and they’re incredible showrooms for inspiration.”
